Coconut Black Beetle control by using two biological Agents fungi (Metrayzium) and virus (Baculovirus oryctues.)

Black Beetle is a serious and important Pest of coconut young palms The pest is common in all coconut growing areas and it can cause a considerable damage to adult palms. It cause to death of seedlings and young palms as a result excessive damage and secondary attacked by the Red Weevil.

The project is designed to reduce Black Beetle pest damage in the field by using two biological agents Fungi ( Metarizum ) and virus (Baculovirus ).

Coconut Pest, “Plesispa” Management programme

Recently a pest plesispa (Plesispa rechi) has found to cause serious damage to coconut specially seedling and young palm in susceptible stage bellow 5 years. The first incidence was reported in the Gampaha District and now it is fast spreading to the other districts in the Island.

The Damage is caused by both "Plesispa" adult and larva and they feed on leaves of the bud region and it is visible when the leaves are opened. Much of the tissues dies and shrivels and the leaflet are torn by wind. Growth of infested young palms is delayed and prolonged outbreaks cause total death.

Biological control of Coconut Caterpillar

Coconut Caterpillar (Oposina arenosella ) is a serious pest inflicting heavy damage to foliage of Coconut palms. The pest is prevalent in Southern, Eastern, Western and North Western provinces such as Hambanthota, Baticaloa and Puttalam. It is a Seasonal pest and generally out breaks occur in the hot dry months of February to April and August to September. Every year thousands of acres of Coconut Cultivation is affected by Coconut Caterpillar. In addition the pest was recorded in many parts of the Island

Thus two coconut caterpillar parasite breeding centers were established by the Coconut Cultivation Board at Batticaloa and Hambantota, and another Parasite breeding centre will be established at Wariyapola.
